If you are a fan of Inoue Takehiko, please pay attention!!
There is some very big news anounced from his official website.
Well, not about Slam Dunk 2 yet, ok?

Inoue News 2006
It's getting deeper into Fall.
The days are getting shorter.
I love it when it gets like this in the season.
We've finished the final proofs for the illustration collections...!
We've perserved to the point where we can now say that we were shown one of the end results of Japan's publishing techniques.
You have my appreciation.
Please look forward to them if you're planning on picking one up.
Time for a continuation of the last column.
Do you remember that one of my goals at the beginning of the year was to plan a "big thing"?
Plans for it are starting to come together.
Well, that "big thing" is a DVD.
I'm going to release a DVD.
It will be titled "DRAW".
It's contents will, like the title suggests, be about drawing.
We've captured the process of actually drawing Vagabond, the hand, and the tips of the pens, pencils and brushes, etc.
The origin of the project came several years ago when I was creating the commercial for Shiseido's "uno", and I used an enormous brush that I had to use my whole body to draw with, to draw on the enormous canvas.
When I watched the process of creating it on the screen, I realized that just the process itself could be a form of entertainment.
There's one more reason.
I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or not, but I've come to wonder if I can pass on what I've learned, and
the processes I've created for myself, and the gratitude I have for making it this far as a manga author, to those who will come later.
It's probably old age.
Also, all the messages I've received from inside and outside Japan wanting to know about how to draw manga was another catalyst for this.
Unfortunately it's not something that can be answered with words.
Then I thought that the best way to answer would be to show the process itself.
Will it be interesting? I've never heard of anything like this before, and I know that that I'd want to see it, which is why it's been on the back of my mind.
And so, we've been able to make smooth progress in the preparations for this great (?) plan, and "Draw" is slated to come out on 11/28.
The whole staff is driving forward together to make it happen.
I'll be putting up updates from time to time so check back.
Look forward to it.
There's one more important announcement I have to make.
I'm thinking about creating a "Slam Dunk Scholarship".
When Slam Dunk sold it's 100 millionth volume, I remembered my thanks for my readers and expressed it to them in an event.
At the same time I wanted to express my thanks to basketball, and this idea has been gathering momentum since then.
With help from many people, it is slowly starting to become a reality.
The future of basketball in Japan lies with the energetic children running after balls in school gyms.
But as they get older, the number of people who can pursue basketball as a career become more and more limited.
The more they pursue it, the narrower their path gets.
If it was a world where only your skill mattered, that would be natural.
But, I feel that the state of Japanese basketball is such that the path forward is too narrow.
There are so many players, and when you consider that it's second in worldwide popularity only to soccer, there should be more love for the sport.
It should be better understood.
I'd like to widen the path even just a little bit for the children who come to love basketball and who want to make it their life to realize that goal.
I want to improve how that's seen.
I am planning to start the scholarship with the goal of helping that in mind.
I'm able to make my living as a manga artist now because of basketball.
I want to give something back to the sport in thanks.
Official announcements are planned to start appearing at the end of the month on a dedicated website, in Shueisha's manga magazines, and in sports magizines, etc.
Please check those out for more detailed information.
Of course, I'll also make information available here.
The 5th installment of the second series of Vagabond is starting and my already hectic schedule is becoming even more frantic.
I'm probably making life hard for everybody involved.
Please put up with me.
Thanks.
